The Friday Night School - VIC

The Friday Night School began in 1996 and is run by St Vincent de Paul. It helps tutor underprivileged refugee children who have often missed their early schooling.

The School was started to help just a few children, however the need has been so great that the number of children who voluntarily cram the halls at St John’s Parish in East Melbourne each Friday evening has swelled to over 400.

The youngest student is just two, grasping a few words of English, as she plays alongside her mother, who is trying hard to understand a newspaper article. Many parents attend with their children as they too have never had the chance to study before.

The Dymocks Literacy Foundation donates much needed books to the Friday Night School, helping the children develop their literacy skills.
